Editor’s Note: Today we’d like to introduce you to renowned health expert Dr. Sanjay Jain, M.D., MBA. Author of the best-selling book Optimal Living 360, he’s an accomplished physician, board-certified in integrative medicine, diagnostic radiology, and healthcare quality and management. He brings readers a no-nonsense approach to natural health solutions and shows them how to take charge of their health.
Below he shares some troubling facts about America’s pain epidemic… but has a few natural solutions that are worth a look. And if you have any questions or topics you’d like him to cover, send a note here.
In the past two decades, opioids have killed roughly half a million people.
It’s an epidemic that hundreds – if not thousands – of medical professionals have contributed to over the years.
But it isn’t just delinquents and middle-aged junkies getting hooked on opioids. Our senior population is at a serious and growing risk.
The Medicare population is estimated to have the highest and fastest-growing prevalence of opioid use disorder in the U.S.
But we don’t need a prescription from a doctor to get our hands on potentially deadly pharmaceuticals.
Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that many people rely on to deal with common aches and pains can be nearly as dangerous when taken long term.
That includes aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen.
These have been shown to cause ulcers, wreak general havoc on the stomach, damage the small intestine and cause internal bleeding.
And according to a comprehensive investigation published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, long-term use of NSAIDs causes some 103,000 hospitalizations and is responsible for 16,500 deaths… every single year.
Buying More Time
Doctors aren’t prescribing these drugs to help deal with aches and pains because they’re evil… or because they don’t care about their patients.
On the contrary.
Docs are wildly overloaded with an astonishing amount of work.
It’s estimated that the average doctor spends a paltry eight minutes with each patient.
And that’s not enough time to deal with each and every one of their patients’ individual needs.
So when a doctor hears the word “pain,” they scan their notes for the quickest possible fix.
All too often that means opioids or industrial-strength NSAIDs.
To be crystal clear, I’m not making excuses for my colleagues. In medicine – just like in any other profession – there are some bad actors. But I’ll tell you this…
In my decades of clinical experience, the vast majority of doctors I’ve known and worked with are good, well-intentioned people who really do want the best for their patients.
But modern medical practices have placed barriers between patients and nuanced, potentially lifesaving advice they need so desperately.
And to be blunt, it’s simpler – not to mention more profitable – to rely on one-size-fits-all solutions than to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that avoids the need for dangerous prescriptions.
To keep you from falling into this deadly trap, I’d like to introduce you to some powerful, natural painkillers that you can easily and safely add to your daily regimen today.
Avoiding the Cornucopia of Psychopharmacology
The painkillers mentioned above have a slew of unwanted side effects – and that doesn’t even cover their impact on our brain function, mood and ability to think straight.
This is especially frustrating considering there are many natural pain relievers out there that haven’t been cooked up in FDA-sanctioned labs.
You’ve probably heard mention of it before, but the chemical compound that gives the spice turmeric its yellow color has been used in traditional Indian medicine for ages… and for good reason.
Curcumin has been found to be a more potent anti-inflammatory than aspirin and ibuprofen. And it has none of the nasty risks the other two come with.
This powerful adaptogen actually attacks what hurts at the source, instead of spreading through the whole body and causing other damage.
You can easily find cheap curcumin supplements at vitamin and health food stores. Just make sure it has piperine or bioperine, which significantly increases the absorption of this powerful anti-inflammatory.
Devil’s claw is another powerful pain remedy that tends to fall out of the purview of traditional medicine.
This scary-sounding herb has been used to treat the painful symptoms of osteoarthritis and severe back pain.
In fact, an eight-week study published in the journal Rheumatology found that 60 milligrams of devil’s claw daily was shown to reduce pain levels in the majority of participants while also increasing mobility and flexibility.
And a sweeping review of 14 clinical studies confirmed that “devil’s claw appeared effective in the reduction of the main clinical symptom of pain.”
As is the case for curcumin, it’s easily available at most places that sell supplements.
These are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to natural pain relief.
But for those dealing with regular pain, both are worth a try.
They might just save your life.
